Ava Keller

Dr. Ava Elise Harlow-Keller was a speech-language pathologist from Brooklyn, New York, who specialized in early intervention, autistic communication, augmentative and alternative communication, and trauma-informed therapy. She was the mother of Emily Harlow-Keller, the stepmother of Clara Keller, and the wife of Jacob Keller. Her professional and family roles later converged in her chosen-family work with Charlie Rivera and in the communication support she provided during Jacob’s cognitive decline.

Ava was born in Brooklyn on October 12, 2011. She grew up with her mother, Lorna Harlow; her grandmother, Miriam “Nana” Harlow; and her younger siblings, Micah and Talia.

Education

Ava earned a Bachelor of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders from New York University and a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Teachers College, Columbia University. Her clinical work primarily served children and families in Brooklyn, including Medicaid-funded clients. She later became a national consultant, keynote speaker, expert witness, mentor, author, grant reviewer, AAC product adviser, and policy advocate.

Colleagues called her “The Whisperer” for her work with children whose communication had been overlooked or misunderstood. She later worked informally with Logan Weston and Charlie on Charlie’s personalized AAC system as chosen family; Charlie was never her formal patient.
